years in Des Moines, then he decided to move his sign business to the Youngstown area. He had hoped to farm, but he continued his sign shop behind his house. Hurd eventually bought up land that later became the Hurd's Hickory Heights developments.

All during the period, the people of the Youngstown area seemed to exhibit a sense of community, of being willing to work together and help each other. Much of the area's history was centered around the school and the resident's desire to educate the next generation.
